TOBIAS AND THE ANGEL:
A CELEBRATION OF JEWISH CULTURE
Tobias and the Angel is a story from scripture, from the Book of Tobit. It is considered part of The Apocrypha and though it is not cannon, some Jewish scholars consider it to be historical and there have been arguments to reinstate the book as canonical, as a part of The Book of Daniel.
It plays out like a folk tale, with themes of love, redemption and an affinity for the natural world and trust in a higher power. The score is filled with musical motifs from klezmer and Jewish folk music. One pivotal scene is a huge Jewish wedding, with a cast of 100 flooding the stage for a spectacular celebration.
In short, Tobias and the Angel is a rare staging of a musical event that celebrates Jewish tradition and culture so openly and euphorically.
Tobias and the Angel is also very accessible and family-friendly. It is operatic but melodic. It is only just over one hour long and has one act, and of course it is in English. The story will captivate children and adults alike, and is at once a fairy tale and a love story as well as a biblically epic adventure.
We want to put on as glorious a celebration of Jewish culture as we possible can. We're not a theatre company with huge financial backing, we're just a couple of people with a huge vision. If you'd like to see this incredible work take place, please click here to see how you can help. We want Tobias and the Angel to be a true community project.
